In this project, we had to create a mask made by a bag of rice and a slab. The slab was placed on the race bag and whatever shape was formed, we had to work from that. I decided to give mine a metallic look so I made these metal plate looking things. My reason for this is because I like the look of metal and I want to glaze it to look like a rusty brown, giving the look of an old steam robot. After I put all the plates down, I began to work on the eyes. I felt like the eyes would look better if they popped out a bit and would look even better if one popped out even more. In the end I was satisfied with the whole thing and decided against putting a mouth on it because I felt the idea I had would ruin the mask. After examining the finished project, I noticed that I unintentionally made of representation of myself.
I'm a person who believes that your subconscious can cause you do things you are unaware of, and this piece was a great example of that. You see, the mask represents my quiet personality. There is no mouth on the mask because I rarely speak, and the eyes are there because I always just watch. the metallic design represent how I'm unable to break free from this mask and am only able to look. No matter how much I want to speak, I am only able to look. I honestly just realized this as soon as I looked at it as it's drying out. It's funny how these things can happen and how they can just slip right past you without you even knowing. Anyway, I'm going to stop being emo for a second and talk about the hardest part of this piece, the plates. I mean, making them was the easy part, but getting them to fit where I wanted them to fit, challenging. At first they pretty much just fit anywhere on the mask, but then there were areas that were misshapen and I had to cut the plates to match the shape. To me, It was sort of like a puzzle, except that I had to MAKE the pieces. However, they came out just as I hoped.
In conclusion, I feel like these piece is some of my best work this year; it even beats the honey pot that I recently made. I'm not sure that many people will get the meaning behind it since every piece I have made has had no meaning to it. Anyway, I think I might try to add more meaning to other pieces I create in the future. As always, it was the process of making this that was the fun part. It's projects like this that make this class super enjoyable.
